Perak Wanita Umno Wants To Contest 10 Seats In Next General Election

Perak Wanita Umno has asked the party leadership to double to 10 the number of seats for the women's wing to contest in the state in the next general election.

Its head, Datuk Rusnah Kassim, said today the request was made not because the wing had won all the five seats allocated to it in the general election in 2008 but also due to the availability of many capable women candidates.

"We appeal to the leadership to provide the additional seats because the wing has worked hard all along to successfully implement programmes at the divisional, state and national levels," she said after calling on recipients of home repair aid, here.

Rusnah said Menteri Besar and Perak Umno Liaison Committee chairman Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir had informed them at a meeting that gender would not be an issue in the selection of electoral candidates.

In the 2008 general election, three candidates from the wing and two others from Puteri Umno were fielded. Umno contested 34 seats in the 59-seat state assembly and won 27.
