RACIST STATEMENTS - ACTION BEING CONSIDERED AGAINST TWO TEACHERS

KUALA LUMPUR, OCT 18 (Bernama) -- The punishment to be imposed on two teachers for making racist statements last August is likely to be decided soon.

The government is " in the final stage" of determining the action to be taken against the teachers from Johor and Kedah, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

Minister in the Prime Minister''s Department Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz said that a thorough investigation was being carried out which included taking statements from witnesses.

"There is an English maxim ''Better late than never,'' but we are not late. All parties must understand this is the first time that civil servants are reported to have made racist statements. So, it will take us some time (to investigate and decide on the action)," he added during question time.

Replying to Lim Kit Siang (DAP-Ipoh Timur), Nazri said the investigators also wanted to know whether the teachers had wanted to incite racial animosity or had made the statements in a fit of anger.

"What is most important is that they had been suspended immediately for investigations to be carried out," Nazri said.

The two teachers are accused of calling non-Malays immigrants, asking Chinese students to "go back to China", and likening the prayer thread worn by Hindus to a dog''s leash.

Replying to the original question from Lim Guan Eng (DAP-Bagan)on the action already taken on the teachers, Nazri said the headmaster at Kualai in Johor was being subjected to "disciplinary proceedings" and placed in the State Education Department.

The teacher at Bukit Selambau in Sungai Petani had menwhile been issued a warning by the Education Ministry.

He had made a public apology and was now placed at the Kuala Muda District Education office, Nazri said in reply to Datuk Bung Mokhtar Radin (BN-Kinabatangan).

Nazri said the government also planned to take legal action against student and blogger Namewee for his alleged racist actions.

"A police report has been lodged and we are considering the legislation under which he would be charged," he said.
