Utusan sacks senior journalist Hata Wahari for critical comments

National Union of Journalists (NUJ) president Hata Wahari has been sacked by Utusan Melayu (M) Berhad for issuing statements against the terms of his employment.

A letter signed by Utusan's general manager of human resource dated April 21 stated that the decision to dismiss Hata took into consideration the company's domestic inquiry.

“After considering factors that have been identified during domestic inquiry that has been conducted, and considering the circumstances surrounding the charges, the company has no choice but to terminate you with immediate effect from the date of issuing this letter,” read the eight-page document sent to Hata.

Utusan charged Hata on eight counts based on statements that had been published.

It is understood the NUJ president has 14 days, from the date of his notice, to appeal to the company's executive director.
