PAS MPs want the government to explain in Parliament reported attempts by Jemaah Islamiyah to revive its struggles by recruiting university students here. Pas vice-president Salahuddin Ayub claimed that he had obtained information from a source that the government had no concrete evidence to prove that JI was actively recruiting youths to become terrorists.
"I was made to understand that during the briefing at the Higher Education Ministry on the matter recently, there was no substantial proof provided that our university students had links with this international terrorist group.
"We want this to be explained in Parliament. We will give them a time frame (to explain) and if they fail, I will expose details of the briefing," he told a joint press conference with other party MPs at the parliament lobby yesterday.
Salahuddin said Pas was worried that the issue would lead to false arrests of innocent members of Islamic groups and others involved in missionary activities.
Earlier this month, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan said investigations showed that JI operatives had been working independently to recruit Malaysian students to participate in violent and militant activities.
The matter came to light following the detention of 10 JI members early this year. All of them had been deported.
The opposition had last week criticised the government for capitalising on unproven information that terrorism threats existed in the country.
They claimed the government was fabricating such threats to divert the people's attention away from issues of national concern.
KOMEN TM;
Takut terdedah tembalang Pas kut?
