POH: After months of impasse, a 94.5ha railway land in Kuala Sepetang in Taiping is set to be released to the state government to be handed over to 643 squatter families as promised.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said he had been informed by Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha that the matter had been brought to the attention of the Cabinet.

“The Cabinet responded favourably and it has promised to come up with its final decision on the matter soon.

“We are expecting an answer, which I think will not affect the state’s coffers,” Dr Zambry told reporters here yesterday.

In January, then Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat had announced that the railway land – where the country’s first railway tracks were built – would be released to the Perak government for RM38mil.

The state government subsequently appealed to Ong to relook into the Railway Asset Corporation’s demand, which it deemed to be “exorbitant”.

Earlier, during a function at the state secretariat yesterday, Dr Zambry handed out land titles to 203 squatter families as part of the state government’s aim to be squatter-free by December 2012.

According to Kinta district officer Datuk Razali Othman, 143 of the families were being relocated to the Klebang Tambahan planned housing scheme, with the rest being relocated to a separate scheme in Ulu Chemor.

“There are a total of 2,881 squatter families in the Kinta district and this accounts for up to 20% of the total squatter population in the state. Of the numbers in the district, 1,978 are in Ipoh while 203 are in Batu Gajah.

“Until July 31, we have solved 455 cases in Ipoh and aim to settle another 215 cases by the end of this year,” he said.
