The Malaysian government is ready to send a rescue team to Japan, and will deploy more rescue personnel should Japan need further assistance.
Malaysian Defense Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi told reporters in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday that Malaysia's National Security Council would send a team comprising of soldiers from the Malaysian army, as well as members from other search and rescue bodies in the country.
The team made up of less than 50 people is tasked to rescue survivors and offer medical assistance to the earthquake victims in Japan, said the minister.
Last Saturday, Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak announced that a 15-member search and rescue team with medical officers and six tracker dogs would be sent to Japan.
When asked if Malaysia would raise funds for Japan, Ahmad Zahid said the National Security Council would study the matter before making any decision.
