IT is never too late for the Government to implement measures to enhance the proficiency in the English language. I certainly agree with “Govt should bring back English medium schools” (The Star, Aug 16).
I studied in S.M. Convent in Taiping in the 70s and 80s. During my time, English was widely used by teachers and students. We had no problem at all conversing in the language as English was used extensively, as though it was the medium of instruction.
It is sad to see children nowadays struggling to converse in simple English. Those who cannot afford to send their children to private or international schools will lose out tremendously. Every child in Malaysia, rich or poor, should have equal opportunity to study in English (Maths, Science, History, Geography) like it was in those many years ago.
Every Malaysian knows the reason for the poor proficiency in the English language, but why is the Government not doing something about the current education system?
Change the education system for the better. I strongly urge the Government to bring back English medium schools. Let the parents decide for themselves which school to place their children in.
In addition, the Government should allow the teaching of Maths and Science in English to remain for good. This will be a good start.
As the writer stated, “nobody is questioning the importance of our national language”. I just want the next generation of Malaysians to be able to have a good command of English, and for Malaysia to achieve globalisation. It’s for Malaysia’s future!
