Govt help widow pay house rent

LUMUT: IT was a huge relief for a widow of five when she was handed a cheque by the state government to help pay her house rent for a year recently.

Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir presented a cheque for RM1,488 to Asiah Mat, 40, at her home in Kampung Teluk Muroh near here.

He was accompanied by Manjung Municipal Council president Zamri Man and Manjung district officer Zamari Mohd Ramli.
The initiative was part of the urban poverty eradication programme.

Asiah, who pays RM124 rent monthly, received a cheque for RM1,488 to cover this year's rent. She stays with her children, aged between 9 and 19.

Meanwhile, the Manjung Municipal Council had embarked on five programmes to eradicate poverty in areas under its jurisdiction between last August and May this year.

The programmes included the urban housing project aid, aid for entrepreneur and skill training programme, entrepreneur kiosk aid project, aid for urban trust fund and aid for house rental.

Altogether, a total of RM1 million was distributed to 107 hardcore poor families under the Manjung Municipal Council's administration.
