IPOH: Police shot dead four robbers in a shootout at Taman Meru 2C here earlier today.
Perak police chief Deputy Commissioner Datuk Mohd Shukri Dahalan said the shootout occurred at 2am after a team of policemen chased the robber's Proton Wira Aeroback for about 30-minutes before they managed to stop them.
"Earlier, a special task team, which was set up to track the gang managed to locate them in Meru, Jelapang.
"The suspects sped off after police tried to stop them, and when they were cornered, the two suspects at the front of the car fired several shots towards the police," he told a press conference today.
He said the other two robbers at the back seat tried to attack the police team with parangs.
"The police have to returned fire, killing all of them on the spot. The criminals were believed to be foreigners who were involved in 15 cases of armed robberies in Ipoh and its surrounding areas," hesaid.
Mohd Shukri said the latest victim of the robbers was a Japanese couple who was robbed at their Meru Valley Golf Resort rented home yesterday.
He added that police recovered a revolver, a pistol, three parangs, three laptops, five handphones and cash in various currencies from the dead robbers.
