Campus election: UPM reinstates disqualified Pro-Mahasiswa winners

Ten of 11 Pro-Mahasiswa candidates who won in the Universiti Putra Malaysia campus election and were disqualified on Tuesday night, were reinstated Wednesday morning.

The UPM administration had told them on Tuesday night they were being disqualified for campaigning as a group, which is not allowed.

They immediately began holding a 'vigil' at the UPM administrative building from 10pm last night.

Five representatives from Pro-Mahasiswa held a meeting with UPM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Radin Umar Radin Sohadi at 7am Wednesday and then with UPM deputy vice-chancellor (student affairs and alumni) Prof Dr Fauzi Ramlan.

At about 12.30pm, the four representatives who met with Prof Fauzi emerged from the building and said objections to the group of 10's disqualifications was over ruled and they have been reinstated.

But the students did not disperse.

Students from other public universities have started arriving to join their UPM counterparts.

The students from other universities took turns to speak out against UPM's student affairs department.

The campus elections at UPM were won by Pro-Aspirasi candidates — out of the 43 seats available, they won 32.

(The pro-Mahasiswa team is known to be anti-establishment while its rivals known as Penggerak Mahasiswa or Pro-Aspirasi is pro-establishment.)
