DAP has decided to postpone its party elections, due by August next year, to 2012.
DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said the party's central executive committee (CEC) decided to invoke Clause VIII of its constitution to postpone party congress and state ordinary conventions for 12 months.
"This means that the next congress where elections will be held and due by August next year is postponed until August 2012.
"This decision also affects the holding of state party elections for Negri Sembilan and Sarawak which are scheduled to be held by end of next year," he said in a statement here on Tuesday.
Lim, who is also Penang Chief Minister, said the CEC was compelled to consider the decision by Umno to postpone party elections as a "clear signal" that snap polls were imminent.
MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek has said MCA could postpone its elections which were due in March but it would have to amend its constitution before it could do so.
He said the central committee had discussed the postponement and the election steering committee chaired by secretary-general Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha would study the matter.
