KUALA TERENGGANU, Nov 28 — A former political secretary to ex-Terengganu Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh has been sentenced to jail for 12 months for slander and sending threatening text messages to several state assemblymen.
According to Bernama Online, Datuk Dr Ahmad Ramzi Mohamad Zubir was sentenced to three months’ jail for each of four charges — three counts of sending threatening SMSes and one for slander
When meting out the sentence, Sessions Court judge M Bakri Abd Majid ordered the jail terms to run consecutively, the agency reported today.
Ahmad Ramzi was accused of committing the SMS offences under section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 against Paka assemblyman Mohd Ariffin Abdullah, Permaisuri assemblyman Abd Halim Jusoh and Ajil assemblyman Datuk Rosol Wahid respectively at E726, Kampung Kubang Parit, between 11.21pm and 11.25pm on April 13, 2009.
Ahmad Ramzi was also convicted under section 500 of the Penal Code for slandering deputy state secretary Wan Ahamad Wan Muda, who was at the time the mentri besar’s confidential secretary, by sending a threatening SMS message through his phone.
According to Bernama Online, Ahmad Ramzi’s counsel had asked for a lenient sentence as his client was a first-time offender and had not caused any violence or injury to any party.
The prosecution argued that Ahmad Ramzi actions had tarnished the state government’s reputation.
The court granted the defence a stay of execution pending appeal to the High Court and set bail at RM15,000 with two sureties.
