MP calls for temporary teachers displaced by new ’contract for service’ to be trained and hired on a permanent basis

M. Kulasegaran urges the government to appreciate the contribution of the temporary teachers, who had given three to four years of service.
MORE than 400 temporary teachers in Perak have been left in the lurch with the introduction of the "contract for service".
The teachers are unhappy that under the new arrangement, they would only be paid when their services are required instead of the monthly salary they received under the previous agreement.
The contract for service means that the teachers will receive an average of RM40 a day when they teach. Under the previous agreement, they earned RM1,200 a month.
Ipoh Barat MP M. Kulasegaran, who was approached for help, said the teachers would also lose out in other areas as there was no EPF contribution, no payment of COLA, restricted medical coverage, no bonus and only 10 days of annual leave.
Since it is the school holidays, the teachers will be without income as there are no classes.
Pregnant teachers were also asked to resign when they deliver.
The new arrangement came into effect on Nov 17.
A ministry official held a meeting with the teachers here on Nov 25 to brief them on the changes.
The teachers, who were not consulted on the new terms and conditions, were shocked to hear about the new contract.
Deputy Education Minister Datuk Wee Ka Siong recently said about 7,000 temporary teachers in the country were affected by the new contract.
The move was effected because of the ministry's lack of funds.
Kulasegaran pointed out the teachers are in for further disappointment as about 6,000 trainee teacher would be absorbed into the teaching service next year.
"Their future hangs in the balance," he said.
Kulasegaran said the government should appreciate the services of the teachers who had worked for three to four years.
"The temporary teachers should be trained and employed on a permanent basis."
