MCA’s position on hudud remains – We will not support it irrespective of who advocates it
MCA HQ, 3 July – During the Q&A of a press conference regarding a RM1b scandal in Selangor which appears to be a bailout of Talam Corporation by the Selangor state government, MCA Young Professionals Bureau chief Datuk Chua Tee Yong was asked how MCA will respond to the UMNO state assemblyman for Kemelah Ayub Rahmat’s proposal on 20 June 2012 to implement “true hudud” laws in Johor before Kelantan to cover all including non-Muslims.
Datuk Chua Tee Yong responded by pointing out that MCA’s position on hudud laws still stands. “MCA’s stand is very clear. In any case, if hudud law is imposed,” he says, “MCA will come out of BN.”
However, he added that he did not “take weight” with the statement because it was made by an “UMNO state assemblyman and not by Barisan Nasional, Prime Minister, or the Deputy Prime Minister.”
“I take weight from (PAS President) Hadi Awang or (PAS spiritual leader) Nik Aziz”, the Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Agro-based Industries added alerting to the fact that insistence on implementing hudud by the President and spiritual leader of PAS has far reaching repercussions on non-Muslim Malaysians compared to a personal opinion of one state assemblyman.
A vote for DAP is a vote for PAS
What Tee Yong is more concerned about, he asserts, is the lack of clarity on DAP’s stance on hudud laws. “We should ask for DAP’s stand. It is not a PAS Youth speaking, but the President and Ketua Ulama. Nik Aziz and Hadi Awang have mentioned on numerous occasions that they will implement Hudud but DAP is still working closely with PAS,” he said.
The Member of Parliament for Labis also highlighted that “PAS has stated that the party is strong and structured and has a candidate who can be Prime Minister.” He then posed to the Rocket, “what is DAP’s stand on this? They only talk about Anwar, and PAS answered that they have the qualification.”
Since DAP is in Pakatan, how will it respond to hudud laws championed by PAS? Since both parties are in the opposition coalition, Tee Yong argues that DAP is “only helping PAS to realise its dreams. Therefore, one vote for DAP also equals to a vote for PAS.”
He then challenged DAP to publicly reveal how it plans to address the implementation of hudud law in Johor and Kelantan, where PAS has been trying to establish Islamic states.
Also present at the press conference were office bearers from MCA Selangor and MCA Federal Territory.
