KOTA BARU: A group calling itself Jemaah Perihatin Rakyat Kelantan (JPRK) yesterday handed a memorandum to Menteri Besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat demanding an apology and retraction for his doa (prayer) calling for the destruction of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

The group, led by Che Johan Che Pa, submitted the memorandum to the menteri besar's political secretary, Anual Bakri Haron, at the main gate of the state administrative complex at 10.30am.

About 1,000 JPRK supporters gathered near the entrance of the complex about 9.30am holding banners calling for Nik Aziz's apology and retraction of his doa.

They also chanted for Nik Aziz to step down as menteri besar.

Their ire was provoked by news reports that Nik Aziz had on Friday said that he prayed for Najib to change his mind over oil royalty, which he said Kelantan deserved, failing which he would pray for the destruction of the future of Najib and Umno.

Police deployed about 30 men from their light strike force unit for crowd control in front of the entrance.

The policemen took up positions about 9am as government cars and members of the public were arriving and leaving the complex.

The JPRK supporters were not allowed into the compound of the complex and the main gate was closed to them.

The crowd dispersed peacefully about 11.40am on police orders after the JPRK supporters were given about 30 minutes to express their dissatisfaction.

Kelantan police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi said no permit was issued for the gathering.

"Anyone planning to hold a gathering should apply for a permit so that we can advise them on the conditions they have to follow for a public assembly," he said.

No untoward incident was reported at the scene.

Speaking on behalf of JPRK, Che Johan said the body was set up as a non-governmental organisation but had yet to be registered.

"JPRK is rallying Muslims from Kelantan to express disappointment over Nik Aziz's statement calling for Najib's destruction.

He said such remarks were clearly against Islamic teachings as prayers to Allah were to plead for good deeds and blessings.

"His remarks have tarnished Islam and are an embarrassment to the Kelantan people."

There was no immediate response from the menteri besar's office.
