KUALA LUMPUR - MALAYSIAN police are keeping a close watch on universities after nine foreign students and a Malaysian were arrested early this year for allegedly planning to blow up two places of worship.
The New Straits Times (NST) reported yesterday that the students targeted the places of worship in Penang and Selangor because they believed that the government was not doing anything to uphold Islam in Malaysia.
The 10 were arrested on Jan 22 during a religious talk at a house in Gombak, on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur.
The foreigners were deported in April while the Malaysian is being held under restricted residence, which means he cannot leave his district and must report to police regularly.
The foreigners were from Nigeria, Syria, Jordan and Yemen and were reportedly led by a Syrian, Aiman Al Dakkak, 45, who was a doctorate student at Universiti Sains Malaysia in Penang. His son, Mohamed Hozifa, was among those arrested.
The arrests came to light in February but this is the first time that the alleged terror plot has been made known.

“Polis merampas dua pucuk pistol termasuk satu pistol palsu.
“Turut ditemui dua butir bom tangan dan sebutir bom jangka hasil buatan sendiri,” kata beliau.
