PERAK SULTAN COMMENDS ROLE OF LOCAL GOVERNMENTS

TELUK INTAN, May 26 (Bernama) -- The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Azlan Shah,

has described local governments as an important part of a country''s "anatomy"

although they come low in the hierarchy of the government administrative system.

He said if local governments were weak, this could adversely affect the

whole country.

"As far as the public is concerned, local government authorities are

actually the frontliners of government service. They''re the link between the

people and the state and federal governments," he said.

Sultan Azlan said this when opening the RM7.85 million Teluk Intan Municipal

Council building here today.

The Ruler said local governments should have sufficient funds to operate as

well as knowledgeable, skilled and visionary personnel who could discharge their duties effectively.
