Tony Pua lying when trying to link PSC charges with "bailing out" MAHB.

===============================

YB Tony Pua's has continued his multi-year attacks on KLIA2.

He had always had issues with the cost to construct KLIA2 doubling to RM4 billion - an attack that dates back to 2010 when KLIA2 was in the planning stage.

This is despite being told numerous times that the cost had doubled due to changes in capacity, size and specifications of the KLIA2 based on MAHB's projections and business plans. - not due to mismanagement or leakages.

Back in 2011, Tony had even rubbished the need to increase the size of KLIA2 from the originally proposed 30 million passengers per year to 45 million passengers per year - which had led to the cost increase.

At that time he said that the then LCCT and the main KLIA terminal cater to only 15.4 million and 18.7 million passengers respectively a year - adding that KLIA was not even meeting its full traffic capacity, or 25 million passengers a year.

“What is more important for MAHB is to improve…our airport in the region instead of being obsessed with everything big,” Pua said.
http://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/nation/2011/11/30/dap-why-double-the-cost-for-klia2/

Based on the latest passenger traffic reports provided by MAHB and filed with Bursa Malaysia, KLIA's 12 month traffic is now at 28.3 million while KLIA2 is now at 30 million per year.

Due to the growing income of Malaysians and the increasing number of tourists visiting Malaysia, KLIA and KLIA2 has seen explosive growth in passenger traffic.

If MAHB had listened to Tony then and did not proceed to build a higher capacity KLIA2, the airport would already be at maximum capacity today.

This would mean that MAHB would now have to scramble to upgrade or build another terminal at KLIA at higher cost to them - and causing disruption and discomfort to passengers.

Recently, Tony had repeatedly and very mischievously tried to link the increase in Passenger Service Charge (PSC) for international non-ASEAN travel at KLIA2 from RM50 to RM73 to make it equal to KLIA1 as a bid to "bail out" MAHB.

This is a blatant lie.

Firstly, MAHB is in a strong financial position. Based on its latest financial report for Q3 2017, MAHB has cash balances of RM1.9 billion ringgit as at 30th Sept 2017 - significantly greater than the RM289 million in 2014 when KLIA2 first started operating.

On top of this, MAHB now generates strong cashfllows. It's net cashflow from operations after tax for the 9 months period for 2017 was RM1.16 billion - a significant improvement compared to RM257 million in 2014.

For the 9 months period of 2017, MAHB reported pre-tax profits of RM283 million compared to the same period in 2014.

Secondly, if indeed increasing the PSC for non-ASEAN International travel at KLIA2 to RM73 to be equal to KLIA1 is to "bail-out" then please tell us why did MAHB also drastically reduce the PSC cost for ASEAN travel from RM65 to RM35 per passenger at their KLIA1, Penang, Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, Langkawi and Johor Bahru airports?

As ASEAN travel is a significantly higher volume compared to international travel (which is only 11% of total travelers), then it would make more sense for MAHB to increase PSC for ASEAN travelers instead of reducing it by almost half if indeed the purposes was to "bail-out a troubled:" MAHB?

Having the same PSC for different terminals within the same airport is nothing unusual. KLIA1 and KLIA2 are classified as two different terminals of the same airport.

Singapore also charges the same PSC of S$35 (RM103) across all four of its terminals despite these terminals having different facilities and amenities.

Tony should note that Singapore's Changi had also moved away from providing budget airports in favour of increased customer comfort and safety when they had demolished their budget terminal which charged S$15 per passenger which was replaced for their recently opened Terminal 4 which charges S$35 per passenger.

Having the same PSC charges is a move is to prevent unfair advantage given to certain airlines which may benefit from lower PSC charges over airlines that operated at a terminal with a higher PSC charge.

YB Tony Pua should stop his obsessive and his increasingly irrational attacks on KLIA2.

He should accept that he was wrong and MAHB was right in their decision to build a bigger and better KLIA2 that cost more.

Instead, Tony should call on MAHB to provide better facilities and passenger comforts at KLIA2 including providing more immigration counters and increasing the number of walkalators.

This would be a call I would support Tony in making.

Although MAHB had now increased the amount of walkalators in KLIA2 from 14 in 2014 to 42 walkalators right now, I find that KLIA2 needs more.
